The Edge from BDI

Speak-up is a control, not a courtesy

Tips detect more fraud than any other method. A helpline is only as good as the trust people place in it, and the record it leaves.

The ACFE's Occupational Fraud 2024 report, drawn from 1,921 cases in 138 countries, found that 43% of frauds were detected through tips, three times more than the next method. The median fraud ran for twelve months before detection.

That makes the speak-up channel one of the most important controls an organisation operates, and one of the least tested. Boards often know a vigil mechanism exists; they rarely know whether employees trust it, whether reports are triaged on time, or whether retaliation is monitored.

What a credible programme looks like

  • Channels people actually use: web, toll-free voice in local languages, email, mobile and QR.
  • A reporter's choice of anonymity, with two-way dialogue that preserves it.
  • Independent triage, so concerns about senior people reach someone who can act.
  • Separate routes for POSH complaints and for questions that are not yet allegations.
  • SLAs, audit trails and dashboards that let the audit committee see the programme working.

Whistle Sentinel was built to these standards, and BDI can run it as a managed service with investigation support.
