Managed document review
A reviewed, coded and quality-checked document set, with a record of every decision, ready when counsel need it.
Secure, managed review of large document sets for investigations, litigation and regulatory responses, with quality checks at every stage.
Investigations, litigation and regulatory requests often produce more documents than counsel or an in-house team can read in time. The review still has to be accurate, consistent and defensible, because what is produced, withheld or missed can decide the outcome.
We load the data into a review platform, remove duplicates and near-duplicates, separate scanned from native documents and organise batches by custodian, date, file type and search terms. Reviewers code each document against a protocol agreed with counsel, and privilege calls are escalated rather than guessed.
Quality is checked at every stage. A second reviewer samples and re-checks first-level decisions, and every coding change is logged. Counsel receive productions, privilege logs and summaries of key documents, with a record of how the review was run.
A matter produces more documents than your own team or counsel can review in time, or the review must be defensible.
Signs we see most often
- 01A regulator, court or tribunal has asked for documents by a fixed deadline.
- 02An investigation has collected more e-mail and files than your team can review.
- 03Counsel need key documents found, summarised and organised by issue.
- 04Privileged material must be identified and withheld consistently.
- 05An earlier review was inconsistent and has to be redone defensibly.
Scoped in writing, run by one accountable team.
Every engagement starts with agreed questions, a reporting line and a confidentiality protocol. The steps below are how this service usually runs; we adapt them to your matter.
- 01PlanAgree scope, custodians, the review protocol, the coding scheme and privilege rules with counsel.
- 02ProcessLoad, de-duplicate and organise the data into batches.
- 03ReviewCode each document at the first level against the protocol.
- 04CheckRun second-level quality checks on samples and on every privilege call.
- 05ProducePrepare productions, privilege logs and key-document summaries.
- 06ReportReport progress, volumes and decisions throughout the review.

Talk to a BDI partnerQuestions clients ask before we start.
Who decides what is privileged?
Counsel. Reviewers flag potentially privileged documents under the agreed rules, and every privilege call is escalated and recorded.
Can the review run on our platform?
It can run on your platform, counsel's platform or one we arrange, depending on where the data must stay.
How do you keep reviewers consistent?
A written protocol, a coding scheme with examples, calibration at the start and second-level checks throughout. Inconsistent calls are corrected and the protocol is updated.
